Sinestesia Eco was born from the desire to create a work that can "amplify" and share the musical activities that take place in the new Study Center on Historical Keyboards in Saluzzo.

Thanks to a software created ad hoc in collaboration with M ° Francesco Abbrescia who manages an artificial neural network that "studies" scores by authors such as Frescobaldi, Domenico Scarlatti and Händel and through a machine learning process, the software that animates the opera will automatically compose an unpublished variation of a piece every day that will be performed at 13:00. The same software, every day at 18:00, will develop an electronic sound carpet, that is a sound that will have numerous micro-variations within it. In this way the same work will create a bridge between tradition and the musical present using different styles, methods and timbres.

In this way, the audio part of the installation will always be different and will develop in symbiosis with the artistic-musical activity of the Center.

The different and multiple sound reproductions representing the vibrating strings of the work will be diffused through 17 outdoor loudspeakers, suspended on the facade of the Centro Studi and mounted in a tensile structure made with harmonic steel cables: the same metal used for the realization of the strings. musical instruments, such as, for example, pianos and strings. The cables will be spaced and arranged on the facade in a grid whose shape simultaneously evokes the internal structure of a piano and the staff.

The work, as a soundboard of the composition activities of the Study Center, aims to create a dialogue between past and present, giving new life to the modal and tonal music of some of the leading composers who have contributed to the formation of the Western musical tradition; authors, who still today offer their notes as a starting point to amplify the possibilities of composition and vibrate new frequencies in electronic and contemporary experiments.

Sinestesia Eco proposes itself as an instrument capable of involving several "senses", simultaneously capturing creative stimuli and historical identity, allowing the perception of visual and auditory stimuli and, at the same time, community awareness. The loudspeakers placed on the facade, which are visualized as notes of the stave thus composed by the artist, simultaneously amplify different experiences and knowledge, echoing the training activity of the Study Center and returning it to the Saluzzo community as a sensory device capable of activate identity and sharing.

The realization of this work is a demanding and laborious intervention that I have carried out thanks to

support of the Nicola Pedana Gallery and which involves various workers and partners without whom

availability, generosity and artistic vision I could not have presented such a work in the competition.

I also thank my brother Walter Pugliese who put his skills as an engineer at the service of the feasibility of the work. The

Sinestesia Eco nasce dalla volontà di realizzare un’opera che possa “amplificare” e condividere le attività musicali che si svolgono nel nuovo Centro Studi sulle Tastiere Storiche di Saluzzo.

Grazie ad un software realizzato ad hoc in collaborazione con il M° Francesco Abbrescia il quale gestisce una rete neurale artificiale che “studia” partiture di autori come Frescobaldi, Domenico Scarlatti ed Händel e mediante un processo di machine learning, il software che anima l’opera comporrà in maniera automatica ogni giorno una variazione inedita di un brano che verrà eseguita alle ore 13:00. Lo stesso software, tutti i giorni alle ore 18:00 svilupperà un tappeto sonoro elettronico, ovvero un suono che avrà al suo interno numerose microvariazioni. In questo modo la stessa opera creerà un ponte tra la tradizione e il presente musicale utilizzando stili, metodi e timbriche differenti.

In questo modo la parte audio dell’installazione sarà sempre diversa e si svilupperà in simbiosi con l’attività artistico- musicale del Centro.

Le diverse e molteplici riproduzioni sonore rappresentanti le corde vibranti dell’opera saranno diffuse attraverso 17 altoparlanti da esterni, sospesi sulla facciata del Centro Studi e montati in una tenso-struttura realizzata con cavi in acciaio armonico: lo stesso metallo utilizzato per la realizzazione delle corde degli strumenti musicali, quali ad esempio, pianoforti ed archi. I cavi saranno distanziati e disposti in facciata in una griglia la cui forma evoca contemporaneamente la struttura interna di un pianoforte e il pentagramma.

L’opera, quale cassa armonica delle attività di composizione del Centro Studi, si prefigge di creare un dialogo tra passato e presente, donando nuova linfa vitale alla musica modale e tonale di alcuni dei principali compositori che hanno contribuito alla formazione della tradizione musicale occidentale; autori, che ancora oggi offrono le loro note quale punto di partenza per amplificare le possibilità di composizione e far vibrare nuove frequenze nelle sperimentazioni elettroniche e contemporanee.

Sinestesia Eco si propone quale strumento in grado di coinvolgere più “sensi”, catturando contemporaneamente stimoli creativi e identità storica, consentendo di percepire insieme stimolazioni visive e uditive e, al tempo stesso, coscienza comunitaria. Gli altoparlanti collocati in facciata, che si visualizzano come note del pentagramma così composto dall’artista, amplificano simultaneamente esperienze e conoscenze diverse, facendo eco all’attività di formazione del Centro Studi e restituendo la stessa alla comunità di Saluzzo quale dispositivo sensoriale in grado di attivare identità e condivisione.

La realizzazione di quest’opera è un un intervento impegnativo e laborioso che ho realizzato grazie al

supporto della Galleria Nicola Pedana e che vede coinvolte diverse maestranze e partner senza la cui

disponibilità, generosità e visione artistica non avrei potuto presentare un’opera del genere al concorso.
